Loly Rico was born into a wealthy San Salvador family. She attended private school, and was rarely left wanting for anything. When, as a young girl, she asked to take piano lessons, her father promptly went out and brought home a piano. For a long time, she only knew privilege. But something happened while growing up, and by the time Loly was in high school, she was a member of the popular movement that opposed the monopoly of El Salvador’s government by wealthy families like hers.
